The vibrant and shifting colors in opal are caused by the interference and diffraction of light passing through tiny silica spheres within the stone's structure. Australian opals include black, white, crystal, and boulder opals, each with distinct characteristics.

 New South Wales - Lightning Ridge (black & crystal opal),

 South Australia - Coober Pedy (white, grey and crystal opal), and

 Queensland - Winton (boulder opal).
