Collection: Australian Opals
Coober Pedy Opal - Lightening Ridge Opal - Nth Queensland (Winton) Boulder Opal
Opals are found all around the globe; however, Australia produces around 95% of the world's supply of opal. Australian opal is highly prized and this rainbow-coloured beauty is our official national gemstone.
The vibrant and shifting colors in opal are caused by the interference and diffraction of light passing through tiny silica spheres within the stone's structure. Australian opals include black, white, crystal, and boulder opals, each with distinct characteristics.
Major opal mining regions include:
New South Wales - Lightning Ridge (black & crystal opal),
South Australia - Coober Pedy (white, grey and crystal opal), and
Queensland - Winton (boulder opal).
